2010 NATIONAL AND LOCAL ELECTIONSCOMELEC approves PPCRV accreditation, urges students
to make use of the Feb. 23 Holiday to register
Date of Publication: 21 February 2009
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) announced today the accreditation of Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) as citizens’ arm of the COMELEC in the ongoing voters’ registration.
On February 19, 2009, the COMELEC en banc approved the PPCRV’s petition for accreditation saying that “the PPCRV has participated in the past electoral exercises where it has ably demonstrated its capacity to promote the public interest and to assist the Commission in the performance of its functions and activities, there is no reason to withhold accreditation to the said entity as citizens’ arm for purposes of the resumption of the general registration of voters.”
The PPCRV is charged by the poll body to act as watchers during registration and to assist the Commission in forming the civic conscience of the Filipino voters and in their education campaign concerning registration.
Meanwhile, the poll body has advised the country’s students who’ll be taking a day off from school on Monday, a national public holiday in commemoration of the 23rd Anniversary of the first EDSA Revolution, to register as voters for the 2010 elections.
“The best way for the youth to mark the 23rd anniversary of the restoration of the nation’s democracy is to signify their love for country by registering as voters,” states COMELEC spokesman James Jimenez, adding that instead of congregating in malls or just staying at home, students should make use of the Holiday on Monday to troop to COMELEC offices nationwide to list up. ###
