2010 NATIONAL AND LOCAL ELECTIONSFirst-time voters swamp COMELEC offices in Day 1 of voters' registration
Date of Publication: 03 December 2008
A big hit, this was how the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) described yesterday’s resumption of the system of continuing voters’ registration in all areas nationwide, except in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
COMELEC spokesman James Jimenez observed that the first day of voters’ registration in the National Capital Region (NCR) yesterday saw a deluge of young Filipinos who’ll be casting their votes for the first time in May 10, 2010. Even though it was a school day, first time voters swamped COMELEC offices around the Metro to make official their desire to vote.
Citing initial field reports, Jimenez said day one of registration in Quezon City’s 1st district yielded 79 new voters; 303 for the 2nd district and 61 for the 3rd district. In Manila, its 5th district recorded the most number of new registrants with 256; followed closely by the 4th district with 221.
And he expects more registrants in the coming days.
“What we saw yesterday is a demonstration of the youth’s burning desire to participate in nation building, particularly in choosing our leaders in 2010. They have stepped up to the plate and are all geared up to effect change through their votes,” said Jimenez, adding that:
“Let yesterday’s impressive initial turn-out among first-time voters serve as an inspiration to all those aspiring for public offices in 2010.”
The COMELEC spokesman said the registration period will run until December 15, 2009. He said filing of applications for registration shall be done personally at the Office of the Election Officer. Applicants will be required to present valid identification cards such as employee’s ID; postal ID; Students ID; Senior Citizen’s ID; Drivers License; NBI/PNP clearance; Passport; SSS/GSIS ID; IBP ID, PRC license etc.###
