Student wants voters' registration on Saturdays

Date of Publication: 21 January 2009

If Jezsicah Aboc, 18, and a resident of Pasay City had her way, she would want to have the voters’ registration extended even on Saturdays.

“As a responsible citizen, kailangan magpa-rehistro din kaming mga kabataan para makapag-participate din kami sa elections. Excited na nga ako bumoto” said Aboc, an Early Childhood Education student at the Philippine Normal University (PNU), while filling-up registration forms at the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) district office.

While Aboc is so pleased she could make it to the poll body’s office to have herself registered on a school day, she couldn’t help but feel sorry for other students who couldn’t do so because they’re available only on Saturdays.

“Sana bukas din (ang COMELEC offices) kahit Sabado para makapag-register din ‘yung ibang mga estudyante,” Aboc said.

COMELEC Resolution No. 8514, promulgated by the COMELEC en Banc November 12, 2008, states that the COMELEC would accept applications for registration only during weekdays (Monday-Friday), from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Pasay City 2nd District Acting Election Officer Jessica M. Abrera attests that Aboc’s observation is quite a popular one especially among the students and workers.

“Humihiling nga sila na i-extend hanggang Saturday ang registration,” Abrera confirms.

The local poll official said she understands the sentiments of voters like Jezsicah, so much so, that election workers, she assures, are more than willing to work even on Saturdays just to accommodate the throngs of student and worker registrants.###
