COMELEC Grants In-House Insurance Package to DepEd BEI Members

The Commission on Elections announced today the grant of in-house insurance package for election related injuries to Department of Education Board of Election Inspectors (DepEd BEI) members this forthcoming May 10, 2004 national and local elections in recognition of the indispensable assistance of DepEd BEI mebers to COMELEC during elections.

The grant was given by COMELEC through Resolution No. 6612 promulgated February 11, 2004 in answer to the Memorandum of Atty. Pio Jose S. Joson, COMELEC Deputy Executive Director for Operations, relative to the indorsement of DepEd Secretary Edilberto de Jesus, which states, thus:

"x x x (2) Grant-in-house insurance package with a maximum coverage of P100,000.00 for election related injury, sickness or death in the manner allowed by law. x x x"

The aforementioned grant was also in regard to DECS Memorandum No. 157 series of 2001 entitled Implementation of COMELEC and DECS agreement relative to the May 2001 national elections wherein it was one of the undertakings the COMELEC has agreed to do with DECS.

 The Commission, likewise, agreed to incorporate the said grant in the Memorandum of Agreement between COMELEC and Department of Education to cover DepEd BEI members who may suffer death or injury in the course of their poll duties for the May 10, 2004 elections.
