Despite the news that the garbage problem in the Metro has been resolved, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) called on all Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan bets to take into full consideration the environment as the post-election garbage that is likely to be generated in the coming polls is "no laughing matter".
"Think green" COMELEC spokesman James Jimenez said as he urged candidates to exercise not only economy in their campaign but also a serious concern for the environment.
"While it is good news that the garbage crisis has been averted "the mountains of trash the campaign period will generate is no laughing matter. This is why we are appealing to candidates to lead by example and take steps to minimize the amount of garbage produced by their campaigns", he said. "Steps they can take include refraining from for putting up posters outsider COMELEC designated Common Poster Areas, limiting the member of the posters to one per common poster area, and limiting the number of flyers they give out.
This call from the poll body came amid complaints from concerned citizens that a lot of premature campaign materials have already sprouted in several areas in Metropolis.
"We cannot discount the power of name recall in an election campaign ,but these early campaigners should warned that they may be remembered by voters, not as candidates, but as vandals who littered their community with campaign materials outside of the official campaign period" concluded Jimenez.
